Union of Internet with TV.. it's coming!

In  an Age class I learned from a coach that mixing Roku with Netflex can be a  good use for Roku.  Now let's check the prospects..which to buy and where.  So I check out customer reviews:
Quick Start guide

Great little device

About Me Power User
Comments about Roku 3 Streaming Player:
I cancelled my cable subscription and switched to local channels only plus my Roku. I have Hulu Plus that I play through Roku and they have plenty of other channels for free. Setting it up is a breeze, all ports are straightforward. Just plug it in and enter your account and voila. The user interface is a BIG improvement from the Roku2, you can see more channels and get to it with fewer clicks rather than scrolling on each channel one at a time. I've been eyeing a wireless headset for a while now so I can watch late night without disturbing my neighbor. I LOVE that they added an earphone plug in the remote. I also installed the Roku App on my Android phone and I'm able to use that as a remote. The Android app uses voice recognition and I can start any channel without any clicks but just by saying the channel.

Pros:
User interface is snappy and intuitive.
Remote's earphone plugin.
Small footprint
Clear picture without any lag (I'm connected via LAN, so I don't know about wireless)
Voice Recognition on the Android App

Cons:
No channel search. If you added a lot of channels in your box, you still need to find the one you want by scrolling through your list. I wish they added something like "Search your channels" capability.
No YouTube

“TRANSMISSION BOXES A significant number of Blu-ray players offer Internet connections through nonsmart televisions. By its very existence, of course, a Blu-ray player, which can now be had for less than $100, runs counter to the ethos behind streaming media. The future is not in physical products, but in information delivered seamlessly to the home” …“What we’re doing here is bringing a Web browser to TV,allowing your TV to access the Internet while you watch shows,” said Salahuddin Choudhary, consumer product manager for Google TV. “This is what I think about when I think about where Internet TV is going.”
This appears to be a solid proposition. By many counts, Google is still working kinks out of its product, and the entire Web-meets-TV experience is not yet all it could be.
Which does not mean it isn’t coming.
“I should be able to watch TV and perform all sorts of activities,” Mr. Choudhary said. “We want you to be able to access any video you want, communicate with your device through speech, stream music, view photos. The sky really is the limit here.”

The company charges additional monthly fees for the service, starting at $12.95.

'TiVo will sell the new devices on its Web site and through retailers, including Best Buy. RCN, a cable provider on the East Coast, will make TiVo Premiere boxes available to customers in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington."

NYT Business Day 8/9/10 has an article covering the subject of shows made for Web. An interesting reading. If we cannot view internet on tv maybe someday the tv will be replaced with shows on the web through our desktop. The downside is that my desktop does not contain the viewing area provided by our TV.

Of special note is "The promise of web video has risen and fallen over the last few years. What makes the current round of interest more compelling is the realization in the industry that the web video will not supplant television viewing anytime soon, just complement it."

So be it! But we believe that eventually web video will ultimately trump TV, when consumers catch on that the variety on the web is far greater than programming available through TV channels.

In the interim it may take broad selection of web video to entice the public. Let "complementing" begin!.

At least that is our opinion.

What's the hubbub with Hulu?”

Austin American-Statesman TechMonday section for August 2, 2010 article

“What's the hubbub with Hulu?” is worth reading if you have interests in viewing internet over your TV.

..” TV site's move from free to premium adds more devices, keeps the ads.”

Check out this article which on page B7, “Review: Netflix still arguably the best deal, but Hulu-watching on the go sure to impress”

Watching on the go is ok for some but we prefer watching internet on TV as the choices for standard broadcast channels leaves much to be desired and cannot match the variety found on YouTube or other web sites. We have watched Hulu from our laptops and found better choices than the regular TV lineup

Have a look at the article and see what samsung TV and Blu-Ray players have in common with hulu plus..

We ask, “Why is there lack of interest in viewing internet on TV?”

What do you think?

Chinese may prefer watching internet on TV

By DAVID BARBOZA
Published: July 18, 2010
is worth a read to see China's trend for watching television via the internet.
Chinese have a reason to switch but so do we if we really examine the scope of viewing internet movies and news on TV.

In subscribing to Logitech listserve, we received a notice about the "future of TV is coming to your tv" which we have been looking forward to for some time. Read and learn!

and..

<<>>

About the same time we read in NYT 7/19/10 issue, Booming Demand for TV on the Internet in China." we received e-mail related to Google TV and Logitech hardware.

We can hardly wait until trend of watching internet on TV is recognized in the U.S..
When a country is behind the curve with other countries in cell phones and combination of computer/TV, we may expect the U.S. public to eventually discover the difference in cable tv with watching unlimited number of programs over the internet.

Seems like a no brainer to us!

This article continues to describe ways to view the web on TV.

Although the idea of viewing internet sites is not new, in this case Google is behind this effort.
